The contest concept first started in 1986, raises funds for ‘Cure Kids’ the face of the Child Health Research Foundation. The $30 donation supports Cure Kids, who have been conducting life saving research for over 35 years and have helped fund world first breakthroughs in cot death, childhood leukemia, and cystic fibrosis.
The place getters in the Internet based National Final, judged by public vote from portraits displayed in regional finals at supporting shopping centres throughout New Zealand. The Grand Final is decided by an independent judging panel.
The 2009 Photokids Portrait Contest has raised $ 7,000 for Cure kids this year and attracted intense interest around the country. Now in its fifteenth year the Photokids Portrait Contest has raised over $320,000 for children’s health research.
Photographer Gerry Leibbrandt has been involved with this contest and Child Health research since 2002.
The contest is open to boys and girls from birth to nineteen years including siblings. This year there is a Special Family Category with an additional prize of a luxury weekend for the adults of the winning family.
Each participant receives a professional creative portrait session in colour or black and white for a $30 donation to “Cure Kids”- parents choose the category and the image to enter into the contest. The donation of $30 goes to the Child Health Research Foundations “Cure Kids” for vital medical research which benefits all New Zealand children.
For further details please nominate your family or child by completing the 2010 entry form or contacting our studio.

What do I need to do?
It’s simple:
You pay $30 to enter your Child in the competition. At least $20 goes towards the Photo Kids Charity, and the rest goes to the running of the competition.
As a Photo Kids photographer, I provide a full professional photographic session for free.
Your chosen portrait photo of your Child will then be entered into the regional contests held around the country in February of the following year, with the finalists chosen by public vote going through to the national final.
Members of the public make a minimum ($2) donation for each vote, which covers the 12 categories.
Amazingly, these votes, plus funds raised by participating professional photographers, have amounted to $320,000 since the contest was established 14 years ago.
These funds are given directly to Cure Kids, a charity that raises funds for medical research for children with life threatening diseases, such as childhood cancers, cystic fibrosis, respiratory illnesses, heart conditions and other diseases.
If you wish, you can order portrait prints direct from my studio.
